The jaw joint is found directly in front of each ear where the upper and lower jaws meet. It is a "ball and socket" joint with a cartilage disc in between the two bone surfaces to prevent pain when the lower jaw moves. When the joint is misaligned, pain and movement difficulties are the result, and this condition is known as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD.)
TMJ symptoms range from mild to severe. An experienced neuromuscular dentist has the specific skill and training needed to diagnose TMJ and offer recommendations for the most effective treatment. To find out how Exceptional Dentistry can help, please call our office in Dubuque, Iowa, at 563-556-2711 today.
Signs of TMJ Disorder
TMD symptoms may include:
- Migraine-like headaches
- Facial, neck and jaw pain
- Tooth pain, grinding, clenching and sensitivity
- Clicking, popping or locking of the jaw
- Ringing, hissing or buzzing in the ears
- Vision difficulties
- Throat pain or tightness
- Shoulder pain
TMJ can be complex, and chronic symptoms can change the jaw muscle habits and even some of the mouth structures. The goal of TMJ treatment is to find the relaxed jaw position and make it permanent. We work closely with you to educate you about your symptoms and treatment so you can fully participate in the healing process.
