Dr. Alexia Oetken is continuing the family tradition at Exceptional Dentistry with her father, Dr. Ted Murray, and sister, Dr. Kristen Berning. Dr. Oetken is excited to be in Dubuque, helping our patients achieve their best and healthiest smiles. As a student, Dr. Oetken recognized that her passion for science and artistic talent would be fundamental to her future career in dentistry. She believes that a smile has the power to heal, give warmth, and share joy. She is thrilled to be a part of an exceptional family practice that focuses on relationship-based, individualized, comprehensive and health-centered dentistry.
Dr. Oetken graduated summa cum laude from Loyola University Chicago where she was a four-year letter winner on the NCAA Division I Women’s soccer team. She went on to receive her DDS degree from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics in 2013. She was one of nine graduating students in her class elected by faculty to be a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, a National Honorary Dental Society, which honors exemplary traits of character and scholastic achievement. Dr. Oetken received the American Association of Endodontics Student Achievement Award, which was presented to a senior dental student who demonstrates an above average skill level in endodontics and takes a keen interest in the specialty.
Dr. Oetken is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Iowa Dental Association. She is involved in the Dubuque County and Dubuque District Dental Society and participates in the annual Give Kids a Smile Day and Iowa Mission of Mercy dental clinic.
Committed to continually improving and learning, Dr. Oetken is a strong advocate for advanced education. While the state of Iowa requires that dentists completes 15 hours of continuing education per year, she has gone above and beyond basic requirements and has already completed hundreds of hours of advanced training. In 2018, she received the Fellowship Award (FAGD) from the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). This award symbolizes excellence in the dental profession and it is presented to dentists who seek to provide the highest quality of dental care. To accomplish this goal, Dr. Oetken completed 500 hours of continuing education and passed a comprehensive exam. Less than 5% of general dentists have received this award. She is a graduate of the Misch International Implant Institute and was recognized as a surgical implant fellow. The Misch Institute is world-renowned, progressive, and is at the forefront of implant dentistry. Dr. Oetken is currently attending the KOIS Center, a premier education institute recognized and attended by motivated dentists from across the globe looking to achieve extraordinary levels. The Center focuses on advanced education with a comprehensive curriculum involving esthetic, occlusion, implant, and restorative dentistry.
Currently residing in the Dubuque area with her husband, Ryan, and their two children, Dr. Oetken enjoys skiing, cycling, yoga, hiking, cooking, and painting!
