During Maternal Mental Health Week, Compass Counseling shared stories from real moms from Dubuque and Tri-State area. Dr. Kristen Berning shared her personal challenges with breastfeeding her third baby. She learned a lot during her experience and is thankful for the local mom-to-mom support she had during that time. Her experience impacted her life significantly. This led her to learn more about tongue-ties and then provide support and local treatment options for tongue-tied babies.
A tongue-tie can prevent a baby from feeding properly and lead to many problems such as poor latch, poor weight gain, long or frequent feedings, clicking noises with feeding, colic and fussiness. For a mother, a tongue-tied baby can cause significant pain with breastfeeding, cracked or bleeding nipples, plugged ducts, low milk supply and mastitis or thrush.
Dr. Kristen Berning uses a laser to release the tongue and/or lip tie so that function of the tongue and/or lip improves and the latch can improve for feeding. She has helped many moms and babies improve their breastfeeding relationship.
