At Exceptional Dentistry, Dr. Kristen Berning and Dr. Alexia Oetken both enjoy working with children of all ages. We aim to create a positive and comfortable experience for your child. Establishing this early helps create a healthy dental relationship that lasts until adulthood.
Our goal is to keep your child on the right track for a healthy smile. “Baby” teeth need to be kept healthy, clean, and free of cavities to avoid unnecessary pain and infection. Baby teeth are important for chewing, speaking, and holding the proper space for when permanent teeth are ready to erupt. Some of the “baby” teeth are not lost until a child is 12-14 years old.
First Dental Visit at Age 1
The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend that children are seen by a dentist at age 1. We welcome children and parents to come for this age 1 visit.
- This exam will be performed in the knee-to-knee position, with the child on the parent's lap.
- This first visit is important to establish a positive dental relationship with you and your child.
- We perform a dental exam and provide education on oral hygiene, nutrition and other kid-specific dental topics.
- We also can diagnose early oral conditions and provide tips to prevent future problems.
Making Children's Dental Visits Fun
As children grow, we incorporate fun into dental visits by "counting teeth", "chasing away the sugar bugs", meeting "Mr. Thirsty," and we finish the appointment with a prize from the treasure chest. We believe that all children should have the benefit of a good dental experience.
As baby teeth are lost, we monitor children's dental growth and development, so we can determine if any interceptive orthodontic treatment may be beneficial. Early orthodontic treatment can be helpful during a child's continuing growth, allowing more effective treatment.
When children do need dental treatment for cavities, we strive to keep children comfortable and calm. We have headphones and movies that children can watch during these appointments. If we anticipate a child might be more anxious, we may discuss with parents the use of nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation for their child. Nitrous oxide/oxygen combination is a safe, effective sedative agent used to calm children.
